Carnival Schaffhausen, Switzerland, 15/11/25 - a little Rabelaisian November fun - the drum translates as "smack the cucumbers".

Last night we found a little bit of Maritimische culture here in Mannheim: we arrived at a Maritime-themed, 80s-lit, Turkish, queer, smokers' darts bar that should have been in Berlin in 1986 - named after a pirate Kapt'n Störtebeker?!?! We're 500km from the sea? 🤷‍♂️ Whatever - a grand place.

The other day a colleague here asked me what’s surprised me most about Germany. The answer is easy: the inter-city “hi-speed” trains are consistently late, and not just a little - very often by 2-3 hours. My colleague laughed, and said, oh, I know: I live in Cologne - I’m late almost every week.

I swear, every day in Mannheim is like this (except when there’s no sun!)

Last night, kind Mannheim friends made us a wonderful south German meal. Some delicious salads with walnuts, potatoes and feldsalat (maché) - and then the star: Zwiebelkuchen (onion pie). Really wonderful meal served with never-before-had Federweisser [new wine]. Thankful for an amazing night.

Six years ago today, my son and I went hiking in the forest south of Middle River, Cape Breton - gorgeous forest walk of about 3 km, then climbed down to this gorgeous waterfall. Amazing day.

I'd not noticed the eyes before! Franquelin's maps are filled with wonderful details. Detail from: Chignitou nommé depuis par les Francois Beau Bassin, Jean-Baptiste Franquelin, 1686.

It is *really* great - we loved it. Also the Odultola rooms. I’d send the video of the steinecke fellow but can’t here - he’s waving his arms, gesticulating (semi) wildly.

Yesterday, presented to Mannheim University Historisches Institut some early findings on Acadian and Mi'kmaq resource use in 18th-century Isle Saint-Jean. Suggestive evidence on mobility, the nature of the resources, settlement patterns, and continued use all suggest on-going negotiation of space.

Also had a tour of the Ehrenpreis Centre for Swift Studies and viewed several Swift works and some books from his library.

Header image from Pictou newspaper, the Mechanic & Farmer (1842-45). I’d guess borrowed from a US newspaper, but I’ve not seen it anywhere. Those big hills make me think Ohio?
