The largest non-nuclear explosion in history tore apart the Canadian port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, on this day in 1917. The ammunition ship Mont Blanc exploded with a force the equivalent of 3,000 tons of TNT killing 1,700 people, injuring 9,000.
