If you thought last year was busy 12 months for athletics with European Championships, Olympics, Diamond League and other important meetings, you better brace yourself for an even more hectic 2025. The World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next September is set to the highlight of the year with the newly re-modelled Japan National Stadium hosting 49 events across 14 morning and evening sessions.

It could not have been a much better year for Irish athletics. Only a medal at the Olympics was missing and, even then, there were two close calls. Jack O’Farrell will be looking to end the year on a high with a repeat victory in the 39th Oliver McCullagh Greencastle 5 Mile Road Race on St. Stephen’s Day. The Newry AC athlete was a comfortable winner 12 months ago coming home well clear of the field. O’Farrell graduated from Loughborough University 18 months ago with a degree in Economics and is now based in Liverpool and runs for the eponymous harrier club.
