This week's creature encounter. A black California forest scorpion (Uroctonus mordax) that was hiding in the firewood. About 2" long and very calm. He was safely relocated to about ten feet away - probably into a different woodpile.

The Gravenstein apple trees are blooming away here and the world smells pretty wonderful. I'm looking forward to July's apples.

Don't be scared. This is a friend. Pituophis catenifer catenifer, otherwise known as a Pacific Gopher Snake and he's helping out in the garden. On the rare occasion he gets in the house, he's always very polite and apologetic because we both know it's a mistake. Anyway, meet Darius.

I've been preparing the garden beds - to grow my own food - and finding a lot of these guys. Cutworms (Agrotis) are every gardener's nemesis. I collected several of these and put them out under the birdfeeder. Juncos were very appreciative. 😄
