Yes, it’s almost like a hairpin trigger to justify escalation. I’ve also noticed that people like to use “non-violent” communication approach as a manipulation tactic too. Almost confusing those they oppose with what seems like moral language. It’s dizzying.

My line of thought comes from dealing with a family member who says very inflammatory and prejudice remarks, and because reacting to them justifies their yelling, I’ve learned to deescalate my emotions and ask more questions to, in a way, put the spotlight on them. It’s effective.

Maybe even go so far as to provide resources to activism that is resilient because of making mistakes and holding our counterparts through learning rather than rejecting them?

Sometimes when I struggle with how to approach a conversation that could be difficult with someone, I ask clarifying questions. Especially, if it is having a negative impact. “What makes you say that?” “Why do you feel this is invalid vs that?”
