17. Birdboy: The Forgotten Children (2015).

Criminally underrated film. It's a slept upon gem, and one I can't help but feel fits these troubling times: a story about the intertwining of fascism, authoritarianism, conformity and middle-class consumerism under capitalism, ecological collapse and generational divides. Just with adorable Animal Crossing-by-way-of-Hot Topic critters. You'd almost be forgiven for thinking it's a children's movie, up until these teenaged furries engage in drugs and sex and often find themselves at the receiving end of horrifically graphic police brutality. Which, I'll grant, might be the reason why it's flown under the radar. It's a shame, because once you get past the shock value of "Animal Crossing x Papers, Please" it's a poignant, melancholic, somber piece about whether it's with continuing to go on in a world that has so utterly failed us and everyone who will come after us. Given present circumstances, it's more than a little sobering.
