The Marlene Meyerson JCC quoting Rudyard “White Man’s Burden” Kipling in a fundraising email sure is a choice…

"41% showing up with a partner, spouse, girlfriend AND boyfriend" - wow, didn't know Tatum had THAT many polyamorous fans but good for them managing to have all four lol

Saw Sirat at the NYFF press screening and… I don’t get it. I mean, I get it’s well shot and scored and scary as fuck, but I’m kind of left wondering what the point of all that bleakness was. Feels like a lot of set-ups just get abandoned at the big turn.

Full review of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery coming soon for Looper, but for now, let me say the Conclave fujoshis are gonna go NUTS for this. #TIFF50

Wanted to love The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, came away merely liking it. Doesn’t go too far beyond its brilliant premise and like a lot of films at #TIFF50 could use a 5-10 minute trim, but the performances are good and it made me emotional. Another memorable international queer film.

Full review of Scarlet will be coming to @animenewsnetwork.com, but my initial impressions: Mamoru Hosoda and Satoko Okudera need to reunite ASAP because Hosoda’s writing without her is only getting worse. At least it’s pretty… in some scenes. #TIFF50

What I expected from A Useful Ghost: haha the ghost is in a vacuum and has sex
What I got: a chilling meditation on historical erasure and being accessory to evil (and also haha ghost vacuum sex)

Maybe a tad longer than it needs to be, but the most original and one of the best films at #TIFF50

Dust Bunny’s weird. A Bryan Fuller Amazing Stories episode dragged out to feature length. I enjoyed the mostly wordless first act where it’s pure dream logic, lost me when the characters try to bring in logic-logic. For kids but also someone gets stabbed in the eye? Sigourney Weaver’s funny. #TIFF50

Went into Blue Heron knowing nothing except lots of people were recommending it. Took some time to get into the quiet rhythms, but once it becomes clear what it’s actually doing, wow. #TIFF50

The Smashing Machine is most interesting to me in the meta aspect re: Dwayne Johnson’s career (is the “no contest” fight Black Adam?). But I’m strangely unmoved by what felt like a collection of Oscar acting clips and fights with weird sound design. Full review to come at Looper. #TIFF50

Complicated feelings about Frankenstein I’ll delve into with my review, but the big theme to keep in mind is this is NOT Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein but Guillermo Del Toro’s. For all the talk of a more “faithful” adaptation, this is its own thing, for better and worse. #TIFF50

No way I’d survive Hamnet this morning after Hind Rajab last night, so my first film today at #TIFF50 was Eternity, which still made me cry but much happier tears. Funny, romantic, great acting, beautiful production design. Should be a hit (though I have thoughts on how it should have ended).

#TIFF50

Mr. Rogers told us to "look for the helpers" in bad times. The Voice of Hind Rajab shows us the helpers, and we see their own feelings of helplessness. So anxiety-inducing as to necessitate its own in-film guided meditation. So real the performances aren't even acting. 1/2

Also saw Roofman this morning at #TIFF50, which I'll have a full review of for on Looper soon, but for now:

Went to & Sons out of curiosity about the "sci-fi/fantasy" tag on the #TIFF50 website. This starts boring, but once the other shoe drops, HA! You'll never guess which early 2000s cartoon this is a stealth prequel to. Points to Imelda Staunton for handling the film's biggest acting challenge.

Between Dreams and Hope was not made by an LGBTQ+ filmmaker, nor does a trans actor play the trans lead (the director wasn’t sure if the character was trans or lesbian for a bit). But when you have the guts to make this movie in IRAN (with a happy ending!), I’ll take the imperfect allyship. #TIFF50

Arco is caught between being a good version of Megalopolis and a bad version of Castle in the Sky. Interesting future setting and nice message, but the characters and comic relief fall flat and the animation’s not on the level you want for a Miyazaki homage. My first real disappointment of #TIFF50.

Good news: Jesus is trans.

Bad news: She’s a tumblr puriteen.

The Testament of Ann Lee is CRAZY (complimentary). Will warn that it feels long and one scene is unbearably loud so maybe do a sensory-friendly showing? But if you like provocative historical dramas and musicals, CINEMA! #TIFF50

Starting to think my post about Agnieszka Holland’s new movie at #TIFF50 only got so many likes because the main character’s name triggers bots… which feels very [Main Character]esque
