The Ladies Who Lunch reconvene at Lester's Diner on State Road 84, near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. I've missed these chats, and their company. Breakfast, as usual for Lester's, was stellar. 🍳☕😋

Pro tip, staff of Motek at Aventura Mall: when you offer water options to diners, kindly let them know you're going to charge them $8 for a large bottle of Saratoga Spring Water _before_ placing the order. That way, you won't come across as money-grubbing scammers. Much obliged. #MiamiHustle

Here's a fun flashback to the premiere of THE IRISHMAN at the 2019 Key West Film Festival with @mcastimovies.bsky.social and @davidlfear.bsky.social. Fond memories. 🎬🎞🏝🍿😊

Four new fall releases from four directors I like:
Kelly Reichardt's #TheMastermind (B+) > Richard Linklater's #BlueMoon (B) > Guillermo del Toro's #Frankenstein (C+) > #Bugonia (C), a rare miss from Yorgos Lanthimos.

Once a year, on a Saturday in the fall, I invite local film critics and other friends for lunch at Seasons 52 in Coral Gables to catch up and enjoy each other's company. It was every bit as soul-tingling and satisfying as the best of these events that I've been organizing for well over a decade now.

Movie matinee on a mild fall day in Portland, Oregon. 🎞🍿🕷🍂

The clock is ticking in #AHouseofDynamite and #TronAres. Kathryn Bigelow's political thriller is a bleak mosaic of despair marred by multiple shifts in perspective that dilute its urgency. Disney's generic legacy sequel rarely stops feeling as synthetic as its sentient AI. My reviews: bit.ly/4ogdhDd

Happy #NationalComingOutDay. What under normal circumstances is considered a celebration is increasingly becoming, in these turbulent times, an act of defiance.

Also, I'm single.

#Anemone brings Daniel Day-Lewis out of retirement, but it's a turgid affair, a middling British telenovela with high-toned aspirations. Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey are very good in #Plainclothes, an atmospheric anatomy of the closet hobbled by stylistic overkill. My reviews: bit.ly/478oO1v

The fall movie season starts off with a bang. #OneBattleAfterAnother, P.T. Anderson's exhilarating 10th feature, hurtles forward like a freight train. Sensational. Also, don't sleep on #TheHistoryOfSound, Oliver Hermanus' quietly devastating adaptation of Ben Shattuck's short story. bit.ly/42JeNFs

In #ABigBoldBeautifulJourney, Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie play strangers who embark on a loopy, fantastical trip to untangle the baggage that's holding them back. Kogonada's 3rd feature is heavy on whimsy, but where are the sparks? Not good, but not nearly as bad as you've heard. bit.ly/423xlA2

Saw the filmed #Hamilton for the 1st time. I'd caught the tour production in 2020 right before we went into lockdown. My bias against filmed theater kept me from watching this with the original cast and holy moly! Electrifying under any conditions, but at this moment in time, a cathartic experience.

I was very mixed on "The Monkey," but with the deeply moving #TheLongWalk and the disarmingly Capraesque #TheLifeOfChuck, the outlook on 2025 Stephen King adaptations is much brighter. Reviewing them for Miamiartzine meant taking a trip down memory lane. bit.ly/46I5S8H

THE LONG WALK: A sturdy melodrama disguised as a grim dystopian tale, this fiercely moving adaptation of Stephen King's book, with Shirley Jackson and George Orwell in its DNA, is a gripping showcase for stars Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson... who are CO-LEADS. They shine brighter than the sun. B+

Here to see multiple sides of Jude Law's, um, physique. Seated for Regal's Monday Mystery Movie, which I have on good authority is Ron Howard's EDEN. 🍿🍑🍆🎬

#AmericanaMovie, Tony Tost's elaborately structured crime thriller/neo-Western hybrid, has thematic heft and a fine performance by the suddenly ubiquitous Paul Walter Hauser, but the Tarantino-flavored #PopcornFrights selection doesn't quite stick the landing. My Miamiartzine review: bit.ly/4lsf0Dt

Can I just say how happy I am that the @netflix.com -and-chill crowd is discovering Alex Proyas' delightfully cheeky GODS OF EGYPT? This movie just gets me, what I'm all about: camp and spectacle. Give it a chance if the reviews scared you off when it was first released. #underrated

Caught up with BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Underneath its cheeky exterior is an affecting, brutally honest portrait of aging, grief, parenting and contemporary dating. Funny and wise, with an exquisite melancholy streak. Don't judge this book by its cover. B+

Audiences at this year's #PopcornFrights Film Fest are in for a treat tonight. The Latvian animated feature DOG OF GOD is the best 2025 selection of the ones I've seen - an atmospheric, engrossing, well-researched period piece. Meatier than the Heavy Metal vibes of its promotional materials suggest.
