As for my opinion regarding this. My father was a businessman in the far east. He worked in Hong Kong in the 1970-90s as well in China in the late 80-90s. And saw China leap from backwards to a major economic power. He understood Chinese culture and how the political system worked.

It is possible that your group could have been stopped for any reason. ( a natural disaster, unrest loss of face by local party leadership. Even today many hotels do not allow foreigners to sleep in them and or if they do. Your passport is registered with the local police.

China was attempting to copy the Singapore economic strategy. The other members of the politburo panicked and reversed course and over the past 30 years have slowly turned towards a Maoist regime. Ie his word was law ( the little red book) That the new leader of CCP is in acting His word is law

I do know at that time Deng Xiaoping was the leader of China (CCP) however he did advocate a more open China to promote foreign investment. When you were there at that time many people still wore the green outfits in many cities jeans was a luxury. China was backward. The protests snowballed

Just like when we first had the internet . AI can be used for good as well as abused. Data that the AI can be manipulated ( Chinese version does not acknowledge Tiananmen Square massacre 1989 ). As a research tool it can be invaluable but again it depends on the user who solely relies on it .
