That was a great trip to SF filled with networking and possibly the best sandwich I've ever had. Now I'm home for a few days before heading to Toronto for Remix Jam 💿🇨🇦 and then to Raleigh for @allthingsopen.bsky.social!

I'm thrilled to be speaking at @allthingsopen.bsky.social this year!

If you've heard me talk about conferences, you've heard of ATO. I've met so many friends from attending ATO events. 2025 is going to be great and I'm excited to be part of it!

Garden update since it's been a while.

Garlic was just harvested over the weekend. Blueberries are almost ready. Tomato plants are enjoying the cooler start this summer while the peppers are a bit behind. Okra, cucumbers, and beans are coming along too.

#EpicWebConf was, in fact, epic. One of my favorite events and a 4 year reunion for me and my Remix conf gang. I can't express in one post how impactful these events have been on me... but I might pack it into a talk sometime soon.

See you next time SLC👋🏻

streams 🤝 composition

I added a function on the connection to send an arbitrary command and get the readable/writable back. Pipe that through a transform that understands the WAL encoding and 🚀

Even better, the WAL decoder *including the protocol* is tree-shakable if unused.

Why write a query like that instead of a JOIN? JOINs begin to explode the result set and confuse the query optimizer once you have more than one relationship branch. This approach makes a subquery that the optimizer will construct an independent subplan for.

It makes possible this highly optimized query using ARRAY and ROW to collapse a nested relationship. Text protocol serializes that value into a string, while binary gives you all the type details for decoding the individual values correctly. I can even tell the diff between Int16 and Int32.

It fits my 21oz Hydroflask easily. The 32oz is tight, but still doable. They are magnetic so they stay snug against the bag when unused. That also makes it a bit more difficult to use while it is on your back. A tall bottle may block the side carry handles also. That's a fair trade IMO.
