precisely the complaint....

It is still necessary to actually have live isolates to be able to test stuff like drug resistance and growth rates... but using it as the gold standard diagnostic causes problems (in the UK farms refuse to believe their cows have TB because the lab culture failed... )

Culture of difficult to culture organisms is maybe not so useful as the “ gold standard” test , reference labs can be very old fashioned in some ways

Collies are pretty much all OCD - they often hyperfixate on fetch type games. Autism doesn't really have a definition we could easily use in dog behaviour assessments. Hard to tell if dogs are struggling to communicate and to distinguish that from the various physical deformities (floppy ears etc)

A commercial vaccine for RVF is so overdue, really hope they get this through the phase II and III trials and get it in production

We were there in the summer , even the teenage boys thought it was wildly romantic

One of my PhD students is a Chilean Veterinarian. What his colleagues have been reporting is indeed very depressing ...... I've become a convert for at least trying wildlife vaccination strategies after seeing the progress Peter Timms has made with chlamydia in koalas...

Urrggghh - the bloody thing is just spreading everywhere now....
November 12, 2025 at 11:39 AM
I'd be up for that one.... Of course my ancestors were deported from the UK to Aus approx 200 years ago so it might get tricky working out how far back they mean..

It is illegal for instance to offer immigration advice in the UK if you are not an immigration lawyer ... (though I don't think I've ever seen anybody actually prosecuted for this...)
November 12, 2025 at 10:12 AM
There's probably enough existing law already to do it -but it would require enforcing e.g. prosecution of illegal prescribing, enforcing advertising standards around medical claims for diet supplements or medical devices, prosecution of unregistered people profferring medical advice

I’ve just given up trying to make the grad students do anything ahead of deadlines ….
November 12, 2025 at 7:56 AM
Christ… it’s bad enough that I have to track the grad students for the home office,

The blokes who put them up said they’d take them down after Remembrance Day .. if it doesn’t happen when the poppies go I’ll be removing them myself…
November 11, 2025 at 8:15 PM
We have the misfortune of reform councillors in our village (and flags they refuse to remove). I've put a rainbow flag up outside the house just to annoy them (so far the football fans have tried to steal it twice)

But they also got exposed to lots of ideas and people and just generally cool stuff through your work (as well as the basic bits of food and shelter...)

This does not surprise me at all. Mostly a Magnificent waste of energy to do things very badly

The Yuin people where I grew up also have a whole set of seasonal lore around the whale migration and of course there is Old Tom and “the killers of Eden” that used to round up the other whales for the human whalers en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_...

It’s a good news story that needs celebrating more . I grew up in the east coast of Aus, it was rare to see whales in the 1980s . When I went home 3 years ago you could see hundreds in a day just just from the cliffs at Tathra (seal and penguin numbers up too) .

What we do desperately need is a lot of bench/wet lab work to work out what the thousands of “ unknown protein” functions are … long and slow and boring but without that the models will just produce rubbish

There is a distinct divided over on the other place between those with personal experience of the man and those worshipping at the alter of success.
