Oh my sweet summer child, if only it were that easy. What about their pets? The extreme details of their sexual history? A catalogue of any wild game they may have had? HAVE THEY EVER BEEN TO CANCUN??? If so, did they meet Raul??? These are essential components to an ID note.

Is a virus causing skin lesions affecting primates called monkeypox racist? No. The minute that virus starts infection black and brown people, who have a very specific history with being called “monkeys,” that context changes. Again, do not call black and brown people monkeys. Just do not.

Imagine a zoonotic infection called “buck fever” that wouldn’t necessary be a problem. But if that illness now started infecting black men you absolutely could not call that shit “buck fever” considering the history of calling black men “bucks.” Context matters. Do not call black folks monkeys.
