So. Let me say – before the movie starts – that I have always loved Act 1 of Wicked. And it was also the case that I loved the first movie. And. I have always felt that Wicked Act 2 doesn’t just fall short, it falls apart. And I hope this will not be the case here.

I’m grateful for the witness of Martin of Tours who, when given the opportunity to have the state enact the justice of the church (a church that was slowly becoming nothing more than the empire at prayer), Martin said ‘No. The church’s problems are spiritual and so its remedies should be spiritual.’

It’s also the case that, at annual convention, I get to see friends that I maybe don’t get to see all that often otherwise, and I am *always* grateful for that. Especially for friends (and professors?!) from seminary who are now in this diocese I call home!

It’s common for clergy to complain a bit about having to attend our annual diocesan convention (or synod, for those of you back home), and believe you me I haven’t always loved three days of elections and budget talk and resolutions.
