A USian in Canada, professing the premodern world. You can take the girl out of the Midwest… Reading, running, cooking, cats, and progressive politics (she/her)
It’s here! Fantastic stuff in this special issue of Medieval Perspectives (including some musings by yours truly). Words matter, history matters, and philology is alive and well.

I bought peaches at the farmers market today and it was a Good Choice

I'm thrilled to have a small piece in this exciting special issue of Medieval Perspectives on "Medieval Words for 2025," edited by Britt Mize and Johanna Kramer, and I can't wait to read the rest of the contributions.

Number 22 of 2025. When you finish the book you brought on your trip & you browse the independent queer bookstore down the street & you find Ali Smith’s latest. She has a gift for showing humanity in all its beauty & frailty. Like her other work, this is both devastating & hopeful.

Tell me you’ve never heard Sir Mix-a-lot without telling me you’ve never heard Sir Mix-a-lot

No one under 70 was on the creative team for this tour?

If the MCU has taught us anything (and it really hasn’t “taught” so much as “affirmed”), it’s that diverse coalitions can amass extraordinary power. No evil is inevitable.

I had a spectacularly unproductive weekend, but I did manage one big achievement: finding a blanket that I can toss into my tote bag for impromptu picnics when we’re out and about around town.

If you see this quote post a show with an awesome theme song.

There’s baloney in their slacks
They’re Animaniacs

Number sixteen of 2025. I love it when poets write novels. This is a lyrical and imaginative exploration of the ripple effects of tragedy and the secret lives of loved ones.

Wtaf. I’m more concerned with “How,” but also “Why”?

Number ten of 2025. Adichie is such a beautiful writer. This multifocal narrative explores women’s experiences as transnational subjects disrupted by living through global pandemic.

“16 underage women”? I believe the word you are looking for, @nytimes.com, is “girls.”

Number six of 2025. Queer awakening meets historical reckoning, in a plot twist I did not see coming. This book made me sympathize deeply with a character whose motivations I don’t fully understand, but whose happiness became very important to me.

Number five of 2025. It’s clear why this was a prize winner; a deeply meditative exploration of how leaving the earth allows people to think differently, and not just in a “we’re all tiny specks on a big blue marble flying through the void” kind of way. Highly recommend.
