Please take a break from doom scrolling and call your senators and reps today about the memo issued by NIH. Long story short, without indirects as part of budgets we can’t pay for support services required to conduct research (like lights, internet, data storage, safety and support staff).

NIH-funded research has led to breakthroughs in treatments for cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. NSF is a critical funder for every field of science, particularly computational and cybersecurity research. Cutting funding of indirect costs will result in fewer jobs, fewer discoveries, and a weakened global standing in science and innovation. In 2023 alone, NIH supported over 400,000 jobs and generated nearly 93 billion in economic activity. This decision threatens the livelihoods of thousands and our nation’s economy. There are serious questions about whether this decision is in the administration’s authority. Current policy suggests changes like this must go through Congress, who must act to stop this harmful order.
