I ordered a kilo of flour. They substituted a caterpillar-shaped children's birthday cake. If I was working at night for minimum wage picking stuff of shelves I might be tempted to do something similar.

Both my children, on separate occasions, found a £5 note in the street. They weren't specially impressed. I mean, when you're only three, how would you know this didn't happen every day?

It's not cruelty, it's legality. Girlguiding requires Girl Guides to be girls. As a charity, it is covered by the Equality Act and is therefore obliged to follow the ruling of the Supreme Court as to the definition of "girl".

Many well paid jobs do not require great intelligence. I have noticed, for instance, that solicitors doing routine work need a good memory but very little problem solving ability.

It depends what you agree at the start. Many volunteers will accept the same conditions as paid employees, particularly if they are retired people who miss regular work.

The organisation needs what it needs. Its customers want what they want. A donation of time, however well meant, is useless if it doesn't meet these needs and wants.
