I could not have scripted a better finale to my time in elected office. I am so proud of this work and so grateful for everyone who had a hand in passing this important model.

NCOIL models are well-vetted legislation, that any state can amend and enact. Today the committee voted and the NCOIL Mental Health Exam Model passed. I have full faith that this model will be taken up in other states, will help Americans gain access to providers, and, I believe, will save lives.

Instead, I poured myself into the National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) where I proved myself worthy through hard work and availability. I helped them to have the first discussion on mental healthcare coverage in the organization's 50-year history then, I introduced this as a model act.

Sadly, it became quickly obvious that I would not be able to get this through in Kentucky, but that didn't stop me.

Similar to a yearly physical, this would allow insured folks to begin a relationship with a provider so they know whom to call should life become overwhelming or an issue arise, it would help to normalize mental healthcare more broadly, would encourage MH providers to come to states with shortages.
