First-ever visit to Japan:
- Sparkly clean
- Amazing public services, fast & beautiful public transit
- Lots of biking (tho more lanes needed)
- Fresh, cheap food everywhere

Impossible to shake sense of dread that we cannot have these things because we do not prioritize society as a whole.

How the hell can we increase transparency/accountability in an age of growing corp & govt secrecy & terror tactics?
Protection/safety MUST be No. 1 if you are thinking of speaking out. But also, like in a protest, the collective matters. There is safety in numbers.

Accdg to Wikipedia, the Office of Government Ethics (which now has no website) establishes the standards of conduct for the executive branch, issues rules/regs for interpreting the criminal conflict of interest restrictions, and more good oversight stuff.
