This programme cover is for the Shaftesbury House Christmas Concert in 1974. Shaftesbury House’s buildings housed the Royston Home for Little Girls in 1908, which later became a home for boys, before closing in 1952. The building no longer survives.

🎄 The Museum is now closed for Christmas. 🎄

Our team are having a well-deserved rest with their families over the next couple of weeks, and will be back in January. The Museum will re-open to visitors in mid-February - we can't wait to welcome you back then.

🎄We've had so much fun with our young festive printers today! 🎄

Everyone designed and made their own printing blocks before using them to print Christmas cards on the press.

These tiny festive treasures are 8 leather-bound calendars (1891–1898) each decorated with gilded designs & lettering. Inside you'll find information about holidays, moon phases, the births/deaths of notable persons, and more key dates.

Everyday cures included peppermint essence and bicarbonate of soda, whilst substances such as laudanum and carbolic oil reflected the shift away from traditional herbal remedies.

Fran's #MuseumAdvent pick is our Victorian medicine chest. During winter, a well-stocked chest was important, helping families treat colds, coughs, and seasonal ailments at home. Doctors were too expensive or inaccessible for many, so these were a staple in Victorian homes.

This glass lantern slide by local photographer Frank Hinkins shows the Parish Church and Frog Hall in the early 1900s. Frog Hall was demolished in the 1950s.

Rhian’s pick for today is this stunning 1948 Singer 201K sewing machine. Beautiful and built to last, it’s easy to see why these classics are now sought-after decorative pieces. She wouldn’t mind finding one under the tree!

Bayko was the first plastic construction toy, produced from 1933-1967. Museum Trustee, Phil, remembers being given this Bayko set when he was a boy in the 1950s. His collection grew thanks to several birthday and Chrismas presents.
