There's an algo picking what goes into a particular feed but it's not trying to guess what you want to see. The discover feed is a mix of people you follow and trending accounts. That's why the more you follow the less "random" stuff you see.

The only explanation I've seen is that there are a lot of anime accounts. Follow more accounts and stick to the "following" feed for a while and it will get better. I no longer see many anime posts.

There isn't an algorithm here. To see more things you like you just have to follow more accounts. I am following nearly 200 now and it is a lot better.
