The inhabitants of these wetlands would develop complex knowledge of the local ecosystems and how to thrive within them. This knowledge clashes with the stratified monocultural system around it, and so it is depicted as magical and demonic, and those who possess it as akin to fairy-tale creatures.

The DreamWorks animated film Shrek (2001) reflects a historical understanding of the political ecology of wetlands. The antagonist of the film, Lord Farquaad, moves to consolidate political power by persecuting the fairy-tale creatures. These diverse creatures then seek refuge in Shrek's swamp.
