So true. I had just moved to MSP in 1998 and was at lunch with my very right-wing boss when she came into the restaurant to campaign. He told her how much he loved her dad, that he lived in the wrong county to vote for her but told her to talk to me.

Without the filibuster, creating a state isn’t impossible. If you want a Constitutional change, you need numbers or leverage. Ditch the filibuster and create 15 states out of DC. They wanna play hardball, let’s play hardball.

The states themselves would have to agree to be merged, and why would they? Otherwise it would require a Constitutional amendment. Good luck getting 2/3rds of the current Senate to agree to that.

Yeah, I’m not arguing that it solves the basic unfairness of the Senate. However, outside of amending the Constitution, which won’t happen because of said unfairness, it’s our only step to diluting the Republican tilt of the Senate. Hell, make each ward in DC its own state.

Add DC, Puerto Rico and other territories as states will help.

As someone living in Texas, this was my hope. But these districts are so finely drawn, that in the largest wave we can imagine, Dems would win as many seats as they have now. Anything smaller and Dems lose seats. open.substack.com/pub/gelliott...
