Vulture TV critic, SOUND OF METAL Criterion author, Peabody Awards juror, usually complaining about something.
All I want from a Robin Hood show is a hot radical committed to standing up for others. Yet the new MGM+ show is psy-op-like in its refusal to give me anything even remotely like that, plus it tries to convince viewers against wanting that at all. Ugh! @vulture.com

STRANGER THINGS begins the end by again looping the narrative, which means the show now holds itself in the same regard as the '80s classics it's long fashioned itself after. that's a bolder move than most of the storytelling itself. @vulture.com:

I wrote about the beautiful TRAIN DREAMS, and how one change from its source material turns the film into a timely argument against complicity, inaction, and ignoring crimes done to our neighbors, esp. when they look different from us. SPOILERS. @vulture.com:

there's a moment in pollack's adaptation of THE FIRM where holly hunter's character meet straitharn's and basically just goes "AWOOGA," it's perfect

benicio's at the governors awards tonight for ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER; was last at the governors awards in 2015 during the SICARIO awards push. welcome back for a far better movie, my beloved

townes's "I'll be here in the morning":

There's no stronger wind than the one that blows
Down a lonesome railroad line
No prettier sight than looking back
On a town you left behind

There's lots of things along the road
I'd surely like to see
I'd like to lean into the wind
And tell myself I'm free

this was a frustrating season of #GBBO, one that made a very specific flaw plain: the technical is cooked. increasingly overcomplicated and inconsistently judged, it's the series's most oddly variable element. fix the technical! @vulture:

I had a good time with ALL HER FAULT, all eight episodes of which premiere on peacock today, and which features sarah snook and dakota fanning making a fuck-those-men friendship for the ages. my review, at @vulture.com:

ALL'S FAIR: not good. but I'd rather watch a breezy ep of this Barbie dream house dystopia every day forever than any of the chasing-prestige sanctimony of like, HOMELAND or THE DIPLOMAT. ALL'S FAIR knows it's a bad TV show, and I respect that. at @vulture.com:

I am thinking especially today about what mira nair, mother of ~newly elected~ NYC mayor zohran mamdani, told me when I interviewed her about MISSISSIPPI MASALA -- about representation and transcendence and how we should treat each other. at @vulture.com:

I wrote ab EP 2 of #ITWelcomeToDerry, childbirth on TV, and how "More than anything, Pennywise transgresses, and for a tween just trying to figure out growing up, Pennywise’s trespass is in realizing who they are before they do." Spoilers, at @vulture.com.

once again watching marty's GANGS OF NEW YORK, a movie whose analysis of "america for americans" reactionary politics has only grown more cogent every year since 2002

Very cool and an honor: Interviewing Miles Caton about his phenomenal debut acting role in Sinners (and getting to be onstage when he performed!) at a 1000-strong sold-out showing at #VAFilmFest last night. Also look at my powerful calves 😅
