On the day the book is published I'll send you a smoke telegram. You will have to unroll and decode it, relay it on with perfect fidelity, and send back an acknowledgement.

The boutique gin turned out to be a good fuel for a tiny steam engine, so all's well that ends well

You mean CALONC.
The name had been changed to Galong by 2018 tho

Interesting. There scope for such ideas to broaden too. That manuscript was handwritten by Hilbert's wife Kathe. It actually says: 'Mathematics knows no races. If we look at the history of our science, we see all nations and peoples taking successful and equal part in it...

Cautionary sign of the day. Geology forbidden. Fair enough. What's the penalty tho?

Roadside sign of the week. Not a sign you see every day.

Not an animal you see every day either. (I didn't.)

Meanwhile, in Tasmania.

Furious farmers drive fifty tractors through the streets of Deloraine to protest a raw potato deal from cheap imports. Beaut little Fergie tractors, too!

Oi, all you chip-addicts, pay a fair price for your fix and support Tassie 🥔 growers!

Oh does it now? This machine at the laundromat washes and outputs your clothes all folded? Well. I shall give it the dreaded fitted sheet test!

Aww... there is hope, O ye ANU colleagues

'The global fashion industry could soon produce enough unworn clothes to almost stretch from Earth to Mars and back'

That's going well then. We Aussies started that project in 1975 from the tail of a Qantas B747, only it was unwashed rather than unworn in that great era.

Mount Gambier station two weeks ago. Such gables! The building is untenanted and in poor shape tho. The precinct was dumped on the local council, which is clueless wrt rail heritage. No-one wants to pay for it. What is to be done? A cafe/gift shop/art gallery? Sure, until it goes broke.

Meanwhile, 4000 km north in the Gulf country they are not troubled by gradients. The game of playing mixed goods trains with vintage engines and wagons on a real railway is still heaps fun tho! #trains #railways
August 17, 2025 at 11:04 AM
Saturday is also fun day! It is diesel's turn to pull the Mixed Goods. Diesel cannot use the rack of course. Can it make the climb anyway, despite the rainforest ick that is ground into the rail surface? #trains #railways

Even more fun was had uncoupling and rearranging the wagons at the top of the rack section! But the Abt engine cannot be turned there. #trains #railways

Friday is fun day on the West Coast Wilderness railway. The crew made up a goods train with a flat and a wagon and a real brake van then steamed it up and down the rack. They played trains all day long. We hates them and it's not fair. #trains #railways

At the Polish food market this morning - the Polish Food Pyramid. Good job! #food

Aha! Behold the ANU campus ducks have been reinstated, after their protest march on the lawns of parliament house. Enough of these reducktions! What next, are they gonna sack the magpies? Ha. That'd learn 'em. [evil beak emoji] @ourANU
August 14, 2025 at 4:18 AM
About that interface you mentioned. Sometimes even that technology fails. Then an Abt rack will do the job!

The OK PIE SHOP, Mount Gambier. Fair enough.
I like it. The pies are just ok. No hype, no frills. I'll give it a go tomorrow! #food #pies

Lordy what an outsized grandiose wedding-cake folly Dunedin railway station is! What on earth were they thinking? That thousands of passengers would jostle and queue at those ticket windows every day and crowd onto half-hourly trains to... where?
July 1, 2025 at 8:19 AM
The Ticket Window. Here is a bloody beauty for my forthcoming photo exhibition on this rare and endangered feature of railway architecture – a triplet! Dunedin station, NZ Aotearoa.
