This dog at Julie’s work has consumed my brain. She looks like a bug. I want to put her in my pocket

If You Come to Earth by Sophie Blackall

A letter from a child to aliens explaining what life is like on earth. If I was making a list of essential books to have on your kid’s shelf, this would be one of them. It introduces kids to many diverse experiences with beautiful writing and illustrations

This Way, Charlie by Caron Levis illustrated by Charles Santoso

Inspired by the real life friendship of a blind horse and his seeing eye goat. This one makes me cry. It’s so sweet and heartfelt. Santoso also has a beautiful sense of lighting in his illustrations.

Hot Dog by Doug Salati

A fantastic example of a book that does a lot with very little written text. This one is a Caldecott winner for good reason. I’m particularly fond of how Salati depicts a soggy, sandy long haired dachshund.

Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen illustrated by Kevin Hawkes

A bit older than most on this list (2006) but I had to include it because I love it so much. It’s about a lion that loves the public library. It’s well on it’s way to becoming a classic.

Evergreen by Matthew Cordell

This one is sort of a red riding hood retelling, but with some really great twists. It’s cute, funny, and sweet, and the illustration blends elements of classic storybooks with a more contemporary art style so beautifully. This one’s long, but uses every page perfectly

Nell Plants a Tree by Ann Wynter illustrated by Daniel Miyares

Another one from a local illustrator (who’s a super nice guy btw) that I adore. It’s a really beautiful story that made me tear up the first time I read it.

Bear Came Along by Richard T. Morris illustrated by LeUyen Pham

Im so in love with illustration in this one. I love Pham’s stylized ink paintings, and the story is very cute and fun. I didn’t include a pic, but the end papers in this book are wonderful.

Treehouse Town by Gideon Sterer illustrated by Charlie Mylie

A lovely poem that captures the magic of childhood accompanied by really beautiful sweeping illustrations with so many little details to find on each page. I’m particularly fond of this one as the illustrator is local to me.

Into the Goblin Market by Vikki VanSickle illustrated by Jensine Eckwall

A wonderful spooky fairytale inspired by Christina Rosetti’s poem The Goblin Market about an introverted girl who must rescue her outgoing sister from becoming trapped inside the goblin market.

I wasn’t even the one helping her, my coworker just asked me a question for her while I was on the way to the bathroom and then she kept asking me a bunch of other questions that could be answered by just looking at the box
