Yes! people freed themselves constantly and plantations were expensive to insure because they frequently caught fire for some reason.

No, sorry to bum you out but slavery is objectively immoral and so is rape. It’s never been a gray area from the perspective of people who don’t want to be enslaved or raped, and those are the relevant perspectives.
