Your friendly neighborhood shepherdess cuddling babies and wielding the crook as needed. The gravy boat is still rocking but I'm hanging on and enjoying the ride best I can. INTJ. Christian. Classic movie buff and 90s baby. Bibliophile for life.
Together again. 💟

I made a bunny. He’s a big bunny. He says: “What’s shaking?”

We feel like we can do anything in the world when they are there with us, cheering us on. Have a happy and peaceful Father’s Day, everyone. And for those who ma be struggling today, for any reason, know that you are seen and loved. ❤️

Hello, darling dears! I’ll be presenting at this year’s virtual Children’s Literature Association conference. I’ll be talking about regional differences in Black American children’s literature, and how modern authors are carrying on these traditions. 🥰

From NYPL's Digital Collections, here is "The Brown Madonna," by Winold Reiss, from 1925. Have a happy Mother's Day. Let's love on all the wonderful women in our lives who have made us who we are. And if you're struggling on today, please know that you are loved, seen and valued. 💞

Yeah, baby! @kinolorber.com has done it again, and I can’t say how excited I am for this; I know it was a labor of love. This is a necessary addition to anyone’s media collection period, but it’s especially significant for those who want to see the full scope of Micheaux and his work.

The kicker is that I was cleaning the shelves above it so I kept seeing the book out of the corner of my eye. 🤣 This is why inventory is key, darling dears. I have the sequel book too, “Let No Man Write My Epitaph,” which was also turned into a film. Hey, Willard Motley.

Me, cleaning my shelves and musing after rewatching KNOCK ON ANY DOOR (49):
“The source book was so good. Let me check and see if one of the library branches still has it so I can check it out again.”

This is Juano Hernandez’ best performance. And he gave some excellent ones throughout his career. The nuance and quiet defiance that he infuses into Lucas Beauchamp is captivating to watch.

Merry Christmas, darling dears! From James Van Der Zee's studio in 1933, this is "Christmas Morning in Harlem." He hand tinted the decorations on the tree himself. 😊

Today would have been Cicely Tyson’s 100th birthday. I miss her dearly. What a phenomenal performer and human being she was. There’s a new picture book biography out about her (first ever!) by Renee Watson and Sherry Shine that I can’t recommend enough. 🥰

Nikki Giovanni made some beautiful works for children. This one, from 1971, was her first; I come back to it often. This perfectly captures the small moments and experiences that are important to them, which are instantly recognizable to the children whom she loved so much. 💜

THE MIGHTY QUINN (89.) He is perfect and charming in this film and I’d have gladly watched an entire film series about his future cases in St. Caro.

I ordered this from the Lion Brand website in the sale section. It’s a reproduction of the original pattern book from 1916. There’s knitting as well as crochet patterns in here; I’m going to start with a blanket and see how that turns out.

The inimitable William Warfield served in the Army during WWII, where he was the only Black American member of the famous Ritchie Boys unit in Fort Ritchie, MD.

This is “Watching The Blue Jay” from Harry Roseland. You’ve likely seen his paintings even if you don’t know his name. They’re adorable; there’s a whole story in this painting and I love it.
