Tolkien started writing the great tales of the First Age long before The Hobbit. He had multiple stories that he was working into one story, The Silmarillion. The Hobbit accidentally opened the door for lord of the rings and a path to publish silmarillion, which was his goal all along.

LoTR is unique in that it was too long to be published in a single volume given war time economics so it is 3 volumes and six books, 2 per volume, but one story. None of the 3 or 6 would stand on their own, nor would one want to read them out of order.
