Former is Old Norse for secondary settle ment/outlying settlement; latter is term for a water meadow or a damp meadow next to a river or stream. So very early medieval origin!

Not an expert on this, but I know many place names in Northern/Eastern England often reflect Danelaw (Viking) period - and the map shows "-thorpe" as well as "-ings" so likely those areas.
