Writing this book has been a completely different ball game (🤱👶)

I no longer have entire days where I can dunk my head into the process. I'm writing in 3-5hr blocks, twice a week. Sometimes I feel like Im getting nowhere, but look! Slowly chipping away (now at 45k words) & enjoying the time so much

East Coast pals/colleagues - I'm heading your way!

Will be visiting Georgetown & World Bank Group Archives in Feb & March 🕵️‍♀️

Then heading to Providence & onto ISA in Ohio with tiny assistant baby R & husband in tow (shout out to Denmark's paternity leave system). Let me know if you'll be around 🙏

do YOU have an FT premium subscription? if so can you please send me a gift link to this?

few things upset me in the way that not being able to access everything on the FT despite paying an exorbitant subscription every month does 🥲

Some good AI news: people still do not wanna read books written by AI & feel unfulfilled if they find out they are

My bet is that this won’t change. Like Zoom parties vs irl socializing & the failure of the metaverse, there are just some (nice, human) things Silicon Valley wont be able to get right

what a time to be alive

In Geneva for an excellent few days on all things economic planning where I’ll be presenting on a panel with the one and only @ceciliarikap.bsky.social 🤩

Thanks to @cedricdurand.bsky.social Hannah Bensussan & Francois-Xavier Hutteau for organizing (& for the v cool conference merch)

@mkblyth.bsky.social on why he writes for public audiences 💯 couldn’t agree more

as a much more junior researcher I also find I often get my better analytical thoughts & ideas when I’m not tethered to the academic article format (& its potential, often scarier readers, no offense)

I am reading late 90s editions of WIRED (for a fun project*) and the ads are particularly fascinating. It's wild to imagine that once upon a time the prospect of meeting strangers on the internet was envisaged as a fundamentally Good Thing. rip the chat room imaginary, I guess

Trump, transitions & turbulence: How can the labor movement respond to the geopolitical & climate struggles that define our era?

Excited that Damon Silvers, long-time AFL-CIO policy director, will be giving a seminar at CBS next week! Please share w/ students & register here cbs.nemtilmeld.dk/1303/

a few weeks ago I gave birth to this tiny human & became a mum. it’s been the most transformative & transcendental thing. also, physically tough with a challenging birth & lots of hospital trips since. mums are so badass. midwives are heroes. expect slow replies (& everything else) for a while 🐌💕

currently (re)reading & ugh i forgot how beautifully written this book is! it could so easily have been stuffy & staid but i’m remembering how much i enjoyed the reading experience the first time around circa 2017(?) - pre-phd, working full time & only able/willing to read what was fun & interesting

my co-author (pictured) and I say thank you to the editors & reviewers for a review process that has genuinely improved the paper a lot & also to my wonderful CBS colleagues for being the best, most supportive & smartest people out there

March 2020 lockdown: I had to change my MSc thesis plans & do something in Denmark, where I was based. I ended up getting extremely into the topic. It will never not feel v cool that it was accepted in NPE & that it now has 100 (Scholar) citations 🤓 Thank you

Academic honesty timeline cleanse: I’ve had some pretty long periods in pregnancy where Ive been too ill to work as much as I’d like (or at all). Sometimes it's made the pressure to compare my output to others hard to resist - compounded by the fact that so many great ppl aren't getting jobs/funding

On Wednesday I'll be in Oxford to speak about some of my research on state capacity, green transitions and de-risking 🏭

I'm a huge fan of the work of so many people involved in this research group & seminar series so this is a big honour!

aaand while I’m at it, here is my other news 🤰🏼

arriving earthside some time in june 2025

Here are some more details ✨

The book draws on my PhD research @iipp-ucl.bsky.social & forthcoming pubs but also builds on that work.

I care a lot about writing about research for audiences outside of (as well as within) academia & John Murray feels like a great place for this

2 years on from THE BIG CON's publication

Eternally grateful to everyone who has read it & to @mazzucatom.bsky.social for inviting me along for the ride

One thing I'm proud of: that we managed to write a book of critical political economy that still finds its way into airport business book shelves

I’ve ended up talking about and sharing versions of this paper more than I ever meant to over the past few years so I’ve done the thing I’m told is sensible and made a pre-print!

All comments, queries and criticisms very welcome

Coincidentally, this afternoon I'll be giving a lecture on our paper and wider related research as part of this series at the University of Münster ⛪

Each for very different reasons, these were my fave books of 2024 📚

Happy new year friends ✨🍻

ps. Emma’s book (on the political economy of care & its value, second most sold in DK last year) will be out in English in Spring 2025. Keep an eye out 🧐
