If you have a portable recording situation, where you can travel with your equipment - you will get the cleanest, most insulated sound ever in your vehicle, out in the boonies. It's a little extra effort but man, the sound quality will be chef's kiss.

I think if you are a strong performer and have a decent mic then a skilled engineer can work with that. Coming from the audio engineering side, I can usually work with a sound wave as long as it's clean.

You'd be surprised. Especially if you wanted to start singing. Sometimes in music, it actually sounds better when it's not slickly produced.

You can still audition for him as long as you have a decent microphone with phantom power. That's the major one we can't bend on. Just indicate your mic in the audition and you'll be good.
