“Donald Trump likes to use a big number to anchor his point, especially when he wanders off on a tangent,” Marie-Rose Sheinerman reports. “Often it seems that a specific figure is on the tip of his tongue.”

My first byline in @theatlantic.com out today:

By Trump’s account, his campaign of lethal strikes is an attempt to extinguish powerful drug cartels, not a prelude to attempted regime change in Venezuela. But even by that standard, the operation is already proving counterproductive. (see link ⤵️)

The Trump administration’s military strikes off South America may be undercutting the U.S.’s long-standing campaign against more powerful drug cartels in Colombia and Mexico, experts tell Missy Ryan and Marie-Rose Sheinerman.

This summer, I wrote about Jose Barco—a Purple Heart recipient in ICE detention, who came to the U.S. as a 4-year-old and was granted parole in January after serving 15 years for an aggravated felony. Yesterday, Barco was deported to Mexico, his lawyer says.

The Biden administration issued a directive in 2022 making it harder for ICE to deport noncitizen veterans.

But the Trump administration has sought lists from jails and prisons of noncitizen inmates and detainees as part of its mass deportation campaign.
For noncitizen veterans who commit crimes, deportation like a ‘second punishment’
Some U.S. veterans who have served prison sentences are being stripped of their legal residencies and could be deported.
