Prototyping! When deciding on my current project I spent 2 weeks making a handful of small prototypes of my many ideas before settling on one that had the most cohesive translation into an actual game and was the most fun! ✨

But this approach works best for my very specific process at the scale of games I make, they are probably very useful when you are in the position of needing to pitch games etc c:

I much prefer to take a simple idea for a prototype, testing, finding the fun and explore the idea within the engine. I find this more enjoyable for me, my team, and ends up creating more fun for players, a GDD can come later when there needs to be a place to review establish design principles

I feel like sometimes it requires me to make assumptions and write them down, even if they turn out not being fun, and then go back and correct it and waste time. A jam required that you just make a design document the first week and then make the game the next week, which just didn’t work for me :c

And also creativity is just inherently risky. And risk is scary, but through my experience it’s been a really fulfilling one to take <3

That’s so valid! I feel like for game dev creativity and problem solving go hand in hand. Each project is unique to you so it has unique problems that you need to get creative to solve. Throughout my CS college experience I’m typically given a problem and told how to solve it, and just memorize it!
