Ceo Campaign for National Parks. Fighting for wilder National Parks in England and Wales.

Nature. Landscape. Rivers. Access. Social justice.
If this came to pass, it would be absolutely devastating for National Parks and National Landscapes.

The Protected Landacapes duty is the main power they have to secure action for nature. But the Times is reporting Ministers considering scrapping it. 1/3

3 of England’s National Parks are hotspots for illegal killing of birds of prey: Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the Peak District - associated with grouse moors.

Today, parliament debate a @wildjustice.bsky.social petition to ban grouse shooting.

The UK Gov must act to stop the killing.

We’ve been shortlisted for “best use of the law” in the SMK Campaigner Awards. 🎉

After campaigning for a change in law to better protect National Parks and National Landscapes, taking legal action was key to ensure it’s implemented properly.

Beautiful blue sky and Portsmouth Harbour this morning. Bonus first sighting of a brimstone butterfly this year. Spring is sprung.

Thanks to @southdownsnp.bsky.social we took my mum out for first time since her hip replacement today - on a brilliant tramper that was *free* to hire. It was “wonderful to get out in nature after weeks of being house bound” and tramper had enough oomph to get up the hills. Buster loved it too ❤️

Amongst the many concerns of “build, baby, build” is the support to projects that bulldoze through Protected Landscapes.

We’ve asked the Chancellor if she considered Protected Landscapes law & suggest she talks to her colleague who has just admitted to the Courts that ignoring this is illegal.

So far, so positive. Note of caution though reading about new strategic spatial planning for energy - and focus on protecting highest grade agri land - as the land that’s the lowest value agri land is mostly Protected Landscapes. 3/

Defra’s land use framework consultation is out - and will be crucial to the future of Protected Landscapes.

The media rhetoric was about safeguarding grade 1 agri land & land for 1.5 million homes. So I was v pleased to see Protected Landscapes so central, making more space for nature. 1/

Thanks to @chrishinchliff.bsky.social for hosting @rspb.bsky.social and @campaign4parks.bsky.social in Portcullis House. Killing of birds of prey is relentless - and National Parks are crime hotspots. The welcome Gov commitment to reform National Park law must include action to stop the killing.

Beautiful scenes in the Peak District for Countryfile going out tonight.

senior policy officer Gareth Ludkin talked to Tom Heap about the legacy of the post-war National Parks vision and what’s needed today to transform these landscapes to be wild and rich in nature.

More good #NationalParks news from Scotland. Scottish Gov consultation finds strong support for reforming Park purposes to prioritise biodiversity, and to deliver more on climate. Legislation looks likely to follow soon.

Exploring open access land in the Chilterns today with @campaignerkate.bsky.social and this is the welcome we got: barbed wire and warnings we might get shot at or charged by a bull.

No wonder people don’t feel like they belong in Protected Landscapes.

Access reform now!

Catching up on the 2024 People & Nature Survey (representative sample 25k adults) and love the question using this pic.

The result: half the population of England (46%) report high nature connectedness.
