The first step in creating a new garden: After the design is approved, one person cuts the sod, the others roll it up and haul it to the truck. Then we install the edging and prep the soil before we can start planting.

Violets are often seen as a weed but they're native, adorable and one of the first things to bloom providing food for the earliest pollinators. I like to leave them and let them spread whenever possible.

What should I prune in late winter? Fruit trees and shrubs. Other shrubs like red twig dogwood, viburnum and nine bark can be pruned now or later.
