"Out! Out!" Hubert swatted at Ferdinand's leg with his cane. "You cannot come in! One of your birthday gifts is in there—" He clamped a hand over his mouth. Too late. Ferdinand's eyebrows shot up. "One of my birthday gifts, you say?!" Hubert slammed the door in his face. A moment later, Hubert came out with his cloak around his shoulders, and he brushed past Ferdinand who followed without a word. The smug man managed to contain himself all the way to the first set of stairs a whole two halls away. Hubert had to give him credit. He was surprised he made it that far at all. "Gifts, mm?" "Hush. Dorothea is waiting for us, and I will not be late," his voice waspish. Ferdinand laughed. "I look forward to them." He offered Hubert his arm as they started down the stairs. Hubert begrudgingly took it.

soft, protective Hubert for your viewing pleasure
His sun-kissed complexion went pale, and his lips twisted into something ugly, if only for a moment before he schooled it back to a forced smile that did not reach his eyes. He murmured to himself, "Ah, it is just a bridge." Hubert maneuvered around the cushions and stacks of papers and closed the curtains on either side of the carriage until only slivers of light made it through. There was no need to see it grow closer. And there was certainly no need to stir up Ferdinand's anxiety on the affair. If Hubert could help it, Ferdinand wouldn't know when they were crossing over the river until it had already happened. In the dim light, he thought he saw Ferdinand's shoulders slump with relief. Just a river indeed. He gently placed a hand on Ferdinand's knee. "Opalescence had a foal, yes? Tell me about it." "Of course." Hubert listened for a few minutes, and Ferdinand seemed to truly be getting lost in his telling. The foal had recently been introduced to other horses at the stables, which was going well. It was strong and determined like its mother. Ferdinand thought it had potential for a mage's mount. Suddenly, the carriage wheels moved from the smooth, packed dirt road to the rattling of the cobblestone bridge. The clack of the horses' hooves grew sharper. The whole carriage clattered along the bumps and grooves of the stone. Ferdinand flinched— Hubert reached his arm out to steady him— and he was clamoring to the other side of the carriage. Hubert wrapped his good arm around him, and Ferdinand pressed against his side. "It is just a bridge... It's just a bridge... /Oh, I'm sorry."/ He covered his face with his hands. "Hush," Hubert said not unkindly into his hair. "I did not expect to be so... adverse to a simple river crossing." "Myrddin is not any river." "It is not." If Hubert had it his way, he would have arranged for Ferdinand to be teleported over, but the man insisted on crossing as usual. A hypocrite, to call Hubert self-sabotaging when he did the same thing. Perhaps that's one reason they got along. They both understood this sort of thing.

Edelgard's lich
Edelgard and Ferdinand had chastised him for being “too paranoid” about it on multiple occasions. He had replied that it was his job, and they continued to look troubled by his dismissals. He had relaxed some since the war. Sleeping more, eating food instead of coffee for most of his meals, occasionally joining Ferdinand for his morning rides or Edelgard for her afternoon walks. But the security and the reports of stray Agarthans and brigands and naive ex-nobles— all the snakes and wild wolves that snarled and snapped at the tree beneath his Eagles’ nests… He would not let up on that. There were no exceptions no matter how much Edelgard and Ferdinand frowned across the tea table at him for it. They could hate him if they wished. He would never leave them to be snatched down and torn apart. Not under his watchful eyes. How ironic, how humorous, how cruel, then that all the security was in vain when Edelgard’s own Minister of Imperial Affairs was what almost killed her. It wasn't the snakes and wolves that were the greatest of fears, but his own talons. Which is why he couldn't be her Minister anymore. He would find who attacked, and then he would hand off his duties to his second in command, and Edelgard would choose his fate. He would not fight it. He would accept whatever she wished. This, at least, he could give her. It was a paltry attempt, but he would be spending the rest of his life making up for it. He would give her everything, just as he always had. And he would have to find a way to give even more than that. If only to begin to make up for what he’d done.
