Not only was the clever use of stream of consciousness, interior monologue, the use of time and memory, parallel narratives, and poetic prose a compelling new literary style, but the content that focused on "shell shock" (what health practitioners now call PTSD), bi-sexuality, and the conflictions of romance was new, but also true, to it's time.
