Such 1 dimensional thinking. There are a few factors. One, people will be at home all day tomorrow instead of being out, including with kids, so consumption will be way up. Two, you might expect to be out again Saturday but you might like the option of not having to go out. Three, most relevant here, is that every storm brings extensive power outages to the area, the last time the last group to have power restored were waiting 3 days. Sandwiches will be the solution to that to nearly all of those affected. And those with batteries or gas cookers or a camping stove can do toast or french toast. That's what I'll be doing and that's why I threw extra bread in. The point is throwing an extra loaf in the trolley just in case or because you specifically need it is a completely normal thing to do and cannot be described as "panic buying".
