3 hacks for clear scientific texts

1️⃣ Scan for vague words
“There was an effect” ➡️ “X led to a 50% increase in Y”

2️⃣ Shorten your sentences
Break up long, tangled thoughts. One sentence = one idea.

3️⃣ Cut the word count in half
"In order to measure..." ➡️ "To measure..."

Clarity > clutter

🌳 Spent the weekend hiking in the French Ardennes. Tiring, but so worth it! The sun, the air, the trees.

And there's something about the cadence of walking that sparks my creativity. New ideas keep popping up, and suddenly everything feels exciting!

Nature = my reset button. What's yours?

Big tip for ECR and #PhD students in #ecology: take lots of photos of everything you do in the field/lab. Get others to take photos of you. Lots. Create an image library. You'll be thankful for the rest of your career for their value in communicating your #science, like in this brilliant thread 👇
Closing by acknowledging a herculean effort by @nilomr.bsky.social to collect & analyse these data, fabulous help from @andreaestandia.bsky.social at all stages, from Loanne & Antoine in the field and Sara Keen for inspiration

I briefly discuss logic in my online writing course, because it's quite useful for writing a good Discussion section.

But I'm by no means an expert, so looking forward to learn more!

The difference between a good and a poor discussion section

is that a poor one answers the research questions using only its own data,

whereas a good one also considers what other scientists have found

To write a logical text, ask yourself: what should my reader know?

What information do they need to understand how you end up at a certain conclusion? What information should you emphasise?
