Signs of a system that's working very well indeed
A record nearly 440,000 students have been accepted onto UK degree courses this week after A-level results included the highest ever proportion of top grades. But their university, department, or course might not exist by the time they are due to graduate. And there are fears that the safeguards set up for students may be inadequate if the worst does happen, with one expert warning they are not protected “at all”. Modelling by the higher education regulator, the Office for Students (OfS), suggests that nearly three-quarters of providers could be in deficit by 2025/26. The i Paper understands that at least one prestigious Russell Group university is among those seen as being particularly vulnerable. Some universities have very particular difficulties because of the way they have expanded. Earlier this year, The i Paper revealed that up to 10 universities were in danger of going bust because of their reliance on risky franchising deals that see courses run and taught by private sector providers.
