I took Dr Ewa Wasilewska’s Anthropology of Humor and Laughter class at the U. “Just a joke” was a whole section. This particular “joke” about Venezuela has many levels of meaning.
First page of the essay: Is It Ever Just a Joke? by Martina Volfova' and Mercedes Douglass (2012) Introduction Language plays a vital role in our social lives. We use language to greet people, to agree or disagree, Language to complain, to give compliments. We tell sad stories and funny ones. Through language, we are able to create and maintain meaningful social interactions, without which, our lives would be unrecognizably different. As Goodwin (1990) and Hanks (1996) assert, talk is "social action," and so is never simply about a subject. From a simple assertion like "the sky is blue" to a minister's proclamation, "I now pronounce you husband and wife," language does things (Austin 1962). Through language we accomplish goals, urge people to act, and propose certain definitions of reality. All of this is just as true for humor as it is for any other form of speech. Keating and Egbert (2004) remind us, the production of humorous 'moves' in conversation is far from trivial and has important implications and consequences in the work of building relationships and social life" (2004:171). The moment we craft a joke or pull one out of a joke book and say it aloud (or gesture it, or publish i), itakes on a social life. For example, Karp 1988) asserts that "humor and irony are subtle and powerful means of expression available to people whose communicative options are otherwise constrained by the social conditions in which they act" (36). Goldstein, in a similar vein, writes "humor is a vehicle for expressing sentiments that are difficult to communicate publicly or that point to areas of discontent in social life... humor is one of the fugitive forms of insubordination" (2003:9). As we will see in the remander of this chapter, humor serves a multitude of social functions of which making people laugh is just the beginning.

I’m in the same situation. I’ve decided the only solution is to become nocturnal and sleep when they sleep. I have yet to broach this subject with my employer.
