The second volume of Taiga Sassa’s manga about Isabella Bird’s travels in Meiji era Japan. Sassa softens and modernizes Bird’s Western, sometimes snobbish perspective on Japan, which I’ve come to appreciate. (I peek into Bird’s actual travel diaries from time to time to compare the two.)

This is what I found in Galbraith’s The Emperor and the Wolf - The Lives and Films of Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune
![Kurosawa was short-tempered when it came to one aspect of the pro-duction: the camellias. Everyone, including the director, worked hard to make them look just right. "All of the camellias in the film were man-made, not real," Muraki explained, "and the leaves were not real camellia leaves. If we had used camellia leaves with the fake flowers the leaves would have [photographed] unnaturally old. Instead, we used leaves of the sakai plant, and the crew changed the leaves every morning before shooting"Akira Kubo, who plays one of the inept samurai, fondly remembered,

Shooting moved outdoors on November 1, to exteriors of the back yard, Mifune's battle outside the shrine (also filmed in Gotemba), and exteriors of the Tsubaki mansion. In mid-December came Mifune's duel with Nakadai. The assistant who operated the pressure cooker-like controls that sprayed fake blood from Nakadai's chest was extremely nervous about get ting it right on the first take. I only have a few pages left before the Sanjuro chapter, so if you prefer, I could also tell you what he told the interviewer when I get to the scene. It’s a beautiful little book with lots of photos.

I still haven’t read them! I’m still in the middle of Lafcadio’s Japanese ghost stories right now (collected and first translated for him by his wife, Koizumi Setsuko, whose name should appear on the cover).
I’m wondering how long “spooky season” officially lasts… can I stretch it into December??

I grew up with the German title, and for a time thought that those are two different movies. Roughly translates to “When the Gondolas Wear Mourning“.

I wish they’d flipped the Japanese cover. The original title is The Yellow House, but the English title was already printed on it. They could’ve just added the original title in the corner… instead, it only says “lemon.”

This is more less the plot, It’s based on the novel by Caridad Bravo Adams (she wrote tons of telenovelas) and they just set it in the Atlantic coast of Mexico instead of in Martinique.
