I love my friends and books and am a nerd for languages and their history. Also movies, photography, sports and Billie the Cat.
The second volume of Taiga Sassa’s manga about Isabella Bird’s travels in Meiji era Japan. Sassa softens and modernizes Bird’s Western, sometimes snobbish perspective on Japan, which I’ve come to appreciate. (I peek into Bird’s actual travel diaries from time to time to compare the two.)

Ah I found the screenshot, always wanted to try that for my history books.

Im Bahnhofskiosk habe ich eine ganze Wand voller Crime Magazine gesehen, wenn man da durchblättert fällt einem wirklich nichts mehr ein. Dazu noch Sendungen wie Brisant und co.

I only have a few pages left before the Sanjuro chapter, so if you prefer, I could also tell you what he told the interviewer when I get to the scene. It’s a beautiful little book with lots of photos.

Billie loves to do that too, but only with my nightshirt, wherever she can find it.

I still haven’t read them! I’m still in the middle of Lafcadio’s Japanese ghost stories right now (collected and first translated for him by his wife, Koizumi Setsuko, whose name should appear on the cover).

I’m wondering how long “spooky season” officially lasts… can I stretch it into December??

This used to be my beloved little Japanese bookshop. The wonderful owner retired last year, but it will always be my favorite.

I grew up with the German title, and for a time thought that those are two different movies. Roughly translates to “When the Gondolas Wear Mourning“.

I wish they’d flipped the Japanese cover. The original title is The Yellow House, but the English title was already printed on it. They could’ve just added the original title in the corner… instead, it only says “lemon.”

This is more less the plot, It’s based on the novel by Caridad Bravo Adams (she wrote tons of telenovelas) and they just set it in the Atlantic coast of Mexico instead of in Martinique.

Well, sold! I’ll pick it up as soon as I finish this Penguin anthology I just got - if I can stay disciplined enough to wait, that is.
