Erotica writer who loves to have fun, telling stories about people enjoying play, and making the world better one orgasm at a time. Author of the “The Neighborhood”, a multi-orientation series of shorts. I also love internet cats/pets, books & music. 🔞🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
The why to your ? also has more to do w/the culture of writers: both the respect & disrespect of our craft.

Too many see writing as just words & bc everyone can speak (& most can read/write) there is an inherent bias that anyone can do it, esp w/fics.

It’s unfair, but a hidden part of the convo.

I’m not as passionate about it as you seem to be 👀, but I don’t disagree w/you that fic writers who want to monetize should be able to do so.

I also feel there are ways to do that, just not on Ao3.

I personally don’t see it as a moral difference. I think the main thing is if a writer is going to do that, it shouldn’t be through Ao3 and like sites.

I also feel that if you have an original concept that is currently in fic form, a writer can make a book out of it to earn money. Even short form.

Fanfiction is a derivative of copyrighted work. If Ao3 makes itself into a vehicle for fic writers to get paid for their works, they risk themselves and the writers being sued by the copyright holders.

Legally fanfic is protected by fair use, but once folks are getting paid it gets murky legally.
