Do NOT buy this Vigilante Pulp Crime Anthology. The Editor and Publisher Philip “Big Philly” Smith is a P.O.S. racist

For #Noirvember movie #19 i re-watched Kurosawa’s HIGH AND LOW (1963) based on the novel KING’S RANSOM by Ed McBain via #NoirAlley on #TCM. At the time this film wasn’t as well received in the U.S. as it was in Japan, however it has since been recognized as one of the best film noirs of all time

These books by Philippe Huet really need to be translated

The next few #Noirvember films are from Japan and I’ve been looking forward to watching these since they are among my favourite noirs of all time. Starting with I AM WAITING (1957) for movie #18

Saw that Alfred Hitchcock’s SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943) was rated G so i decided to watch it with my nieces for #Noirvember movie #17

For #16 we have a newer film for #Noirvember. From Bong Joon Ho who brought us PARASITE, THE HOST, MICKEY 17 etc.. via the Criterion Collection, we saw MEMORIES OF MURDER (2003) a funny neo-noir, (and its not a parody which is rare)

Film #15 for #Noirvemver was actually good and the complete opposite of the last one. THE UNFAITHFUL (1947) is a remake of THE LETTER (1929) and remade again for TV in 1982

#Noirvember movie #14 was a real stinker. SOUTHSIDE 1-1000 (1950) is probably one of the worst noirs I’ve ever seen.

Entry #13 for #Noirvember 🎬 was the excellent Hays Code-free HÔTEL DU NORD (1938). I never see anyone talk about this movie which is a shame. I borrowed the Criterion DVD from the library and I will try to get my hands on copies of LE JOUR SE LÈVE and LE QUAI DES BRÛMES (also by Carné) asap

#Noirvember movie #12 was PANIQUE (1946) where Michel Simon faces the ultimate cancellation by his town based on nothing but discrimination and rumours. Was a first time watch for me and like the brief wrestling scene, suspending your disbelief makes watching this lots of fun

can’t stop thinking about this movie

Entry #10 of Noirvember was BLACK TUESDAY (1954) starring Edward G. Robinson. A prison noir with tons of action as I think have the movie is a gunfight. Pretty sure Michael Mann saw this before he made HEAT

For movie #11 of Noirvember I watched MILDRED PIERCE (1945) or aka “Everyone Involved in this Picture is Annoying” based on the novel by James M. Cain. It’s a good film, I just hate every single character 🎬

If you like this movie here’s a couple of other films with similar settings/themes:

SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943) and
THE RECKLESS MOMENT (1949)

CBS only aired 6 of 8 episodes of BIG APPLE (2001) and prematurely cancelled it which is a damn tragedy if you ask me. Great cast, the acting was on point and the scripts were fresh, setting it apart from other cop shows at the time.

I mean look at the names on here - absolutely stacked

Depends on who asks. If I want to introduce a younger person, for context I’d start with a neo-noir like BRICK (2005) but if it’s someone older I’d show them THE BIG SLEEP (1946)

For official #Noirvember entry #9, I watched NIGHT MUST FALL (1964) which was apparently a critical and financial dud. Unsure why, it’s a perfectly serviceable b-movie staring Albert Finney as a off-the-wall creepy psychopath

Not a film I’d watch over and over again but I’m glad I saw it
