I’m a United Methodist Pastor and Seminarian, but the ideas shared here are explorative and presented only for my own expression and your dialogue. Please don’t hold the institutions I am in responsible for my adhd ramblings. Thanks. I’m glad you’re here ❤️
I’m done saying the pledge of allegiance. Wish I was years ago. If I have to be in a room where people say the pledge of allegiance, I will say

“I pledge allegiance to…

…God”

Right there in the middle of their pledge. Hand on my heart. I’ll mean what I say.

But I’m done with the full thing.

How come Meta never advertised MY proposal to a bunch of people who don’t even follow me?😂

I can’t wait to be in my 90s, sitting in my La-Z-Boy, listening to my kids tell my grandkids about how their Papaw boldly preached the gospel, empowered people, and resisted the fascist forces that tried to overthrow the country. There is a good chance that’ll be the most proud moment of my life.

Things my wife said about Bob Ross tonight, taken out of context:

“He’s not thaaat special”

“I just don’t feel like he’s enough”

“I mean he only really does like one thing”

I hope that in the new way forward for progressive Christianity, we can begin to take seriously men’s spirituality.

I’m suggesting this be done with feminist critiques at the forefront of our approach.

But unspiritual men are bad for women, and we need men’s specific spirituality to address it.

If you think about it, almost all religions have some form of burning incense. American Protestantism seems to lack such a practice.

But in the pseudo religion of Christian Nationalism, people light sparklers at the 4th of July. Feels a little like incense to me.

Gross.

If I had more time and more money (story of all our lives right?)….

I’d buy a bunch of small American flags and dowel rods and glue the flags to the middle of the dowel, jump on TikTok and say “buy now exclusively on the TikTok shop, limited run, Trump Inauguration flags.” I bet I’d make a killing.

Me, making appointments with church members:

Let’s plan on that unless the weather is bananas.

…or snow. Snow is probably more likely than bananas.

Today someone in my Sunday School class said “MY Bible says I have the right to judge” and I was fully ready to shut it down with the sermon on the mount in Matthew 7, but I didn’t have to because one of the newest members of the church lovingly shared why that wasn’t true. I’m a proud pastor today!

The Advent Candles, well used by the end of the season, are a reminder that holy things can sometimes appear messy. That doesn’t mean they stop God from moving through them.

May you make many holy messes in the New Year, friends!

Last sermon of the year was awesome. Went without notes, and was fully engaged with the people rather than the paper or pulpit or podium. Felt the presence of the spirit in the sanctuary. More of this in the new year, I pray🙏🏼

Did you know that the name James is not a good translation on the name for the Brother of Jesus, the Disciple, the letter writer?

It’s really more like Jacob.

I’ll explain 👇🏻

King James is weird dude.

Like, in Luke 1:40, part of this week’s lectionary text, every single translation I can find translates ασπάζομαι (aspazomai) as “greets.”

King James has “salutes”

Imagine, pregnant Mary is meeting pregnant Elizabeth and the first thing she does is she “salutes” her?!

Unsolicited advice? Sure.

I’m just trying really hard to find anywhere that Jesus called someone an abomination and having no luck.

Do you think… that maybe it was people that put that in the Bible?

Dude if I could just have a dollar for every time I accidentally put a cross on an L when I’m crossing my Ts, I think I could pay off a lot of student loan debt.

You ever hear that it’s impossible to step into the same river twice because the water will be different?

So it is with scripture. We have new emphases, new understanding, and new experiences when we revisit an old text. The waters change but the stream still leads to the same place.

Inspiring reading this morning for me comes from Valerie Kaur, author of the upcoming book “Sage Warrior” about her Sikh tradition:

“To pursue a life of revolutionary love is to walk boldly into the hotwinds of the world with the eyes of a sage and the heart of a warrior.”

I could strive for that.

“For another morning I eagerly arm myself with that which is mightier than the sword to contemplate those things which are mightier than war. In other words, armed only with love, I start my morning writing.”

Today’s morning drive was spent listening to Robert Greene on Mark Manson’s podcast, which I will call “The Subtle Art Podcast.” Highly recommend!

I really hope this app actually takes off as a space where regular people post often. One of the things that stunk when TikTok came out was to connect with all these people only to find out all we do is consume instead of post. This format requires less production.

So let’s actually share ideas!!

For better or worse, or a little bit of both!

Now accepting other claims as to what is “the most significant book of the 19th century” for discussion🤔

Fun fact, the word ίδιος (idios) in Greek means “pertaining to one’s self.”

Eventually the word “idiot” comes through Latin to English.

But at least etymologically, one might say that the word “idiot” is just another way of saying “selfish”. Seems fitting.

Excited for a place where people can explore questions about religion, politics, philosophy, etc in a safe and open way.

So friends, who is doing that work? Who should we be following?
