not to sound like a weeb but this is near exclusive to western fanart, at least in the particular case of hornet; i follow a good amount of eastern fanartists on twitter and they all draw cute on model characters

My interpretation, which is perhaps generous, is that they were building the spaceships like we build rockets in real life, with robust but old and simple tech to reduce the possibility of equipment failures. The ship was out on like, a 60 year mission after all

oh, if you haven't already seen it, you should continue on to Turn A Gundam! It was made immediately after and has so much production/cast continuity. I love them both a lot, they pair really well
