Jack held back a smile and nodded silently. He couldn’t resist Nicholas’ seductions when he used that voice and that is something that Nicholas also knew. His voice was deep and smooth with a soft rumble. It wasn’t rough or scratchy. It reminded Jack of a bubbling river or the resounding sound of a church organ. If Jack was to discover, in no particular way, that Nicholas was an incubus it would not be a revelation."

Jack slumped himself against his cushioned chair. He rubbed his finger against the green embroidery as his mind worked him into a bundle of nerves. It was only midday yet here he was lounging around concerned about a man and marriage. While others would say Jack is the appropriate age to be thinking about marriage he would respectfully disagree. He had only recently completed his education and the thought of entering the workforce terrified him.

It would be a silly matter for Jack to court a man. The thought conjured the silliest of daydreams. Introducing himself to Nicholas' father, presenting him with flowers before taking a stroll around the estate, and exchanging shameless glances with one another over dinner. If the courting was successful it could result in marriage. Who would wear the dress? The thought of Nicholas in a dress caused Jack to chuckle.

Jack walked deeper into the maze. A chilly breeze brushed against his cheeks. He decided to turn around with the belief that Nicholas was waiting for him at the entrance and Jack had simply missed him. He turned around only to find a wall of foliage in front of him. Jack let out a little huff of annoyance. If he didn’t find Nicholas soon he was going to find himself lost instead. Well, he was most likely, possibly, already lost. “Nicholas?” he quietly called out as he rounded a corner. He felt a gentle hand touch his back in response. Startled, he turned only to discover Nicholas' deep brown eyes staring at him. Jack had not heard him approach. This wasn’t uncommon. Nicholas was a quiet, almost sneaky, man who easily and frequently slipped away without Jack noticing. Frustratingly.

The house was quiet except for the sound of the birds in the alder trees that lined the street outside of his home. He could hear the quiet chatter of people passing by. He chose to live in a terraced house in the middle of the city because he could not stand the silent sound of the countryside. He could not fathom how people like Jack could live on such large estates. It was most likely because they were not alone. The bustling sound of family members and staff must've been enough to block out the ringing of quietness.

Standing up he lumbered over to the dead fireplace. He poked around with a fire iron searching for any potential embers. After a futile search he sighed and tossed the poke to the ground. He considered putting on trousers before laughing at the thought. He sat his bare arse down on the cushioned couch. He smirked at the thought of Jack's reaction if he saw him naked on the couch. Perhaps he would faint at the action.

It was just a dream. An unhappy dream that was, most unfortunately, realistic. A man like him stood no chance against the beauty of a woman like Monica. The memory of the dream was quickly fading, but the feelings remained. He chuckled to himself. He felt a bit ridiculous being upset over a dream.

He hugged himself to help fight off the nipping cold. He didn’t bring his coat for fear of attracting unwanted attention. Nicholas always chose the oddest places to meet. The first time was in a broom closet down the hall from his bedroom. When Jack pointed out that his bedroom was not far, Nicholas insisted on the closet. The second time was in a cluster of trees after a garden party. They could have easily met in a private out-of-the-way room with no worry of being disturbed. Yet, here he was, walking along a path with gravel crunching beneath his dress shoes.

He let out a loud sigh. Loud enough that heads would have turned if there were any around. He kicked at the gravel. As he approached the house he noticed the windows that glowed with warm light. Centered in one of the windows was Nicholas. The image of him could have come from one of the many paintings inside the manor; it was so naturally artistic. His form was one of strength and confidence. You could read the charisma just from his smile that was perfectly framed between dimples. His arm was effortlessly resting around a woman’s shoulders as if it wasn’t just wrapped around Jack’s waist or holding his hand. Paintings belong in a museum for a reason. They are unobtainable and Nicholas was something that Jack would never truly obtain.

The lush lawn was still vibrant despite the weather and time of year. Jack wandered deeper into the garden out of view of the home. Farther into the greenery was an abundance of roses. When Jack was a little boy he had insisted that his mother have them planted. He liked the way they looked and loved them even when his fingers got pricked.

Adam told us you two are quite close,” Emma said, not ashamed of her true intentions being revealed. “I’m afraid I can’t help you. I have not spoken to Nicholas as of late. My brother exaggerates, we are merely acquaintances.” It was true. Jack had not been in contact with Nicholas since his unannounced visit two weeks prior. A frown appeared upon Emma’s face, but she was quick to cover it. “Such shame. I’m sure you two would make excellent friends.”

It wasn’t fair how Nicholas teased him. He seemed to be so flippant with his status and reputation. Probably because he knew he could get away with whatever he wanted. Unlike Jack, which he also knew, probably. Jack moved his foot and nudged the side of Nicholas' shoe. Nicholas stayed silent and smiling as Jack dragged the toe of his shoe up his leg.

The woman would gently touch Nicholas arm or shoulder during their conversation. She fit perfectly at his side. Her name was Monica.”
