Everyone agrees the health system is broken, but fixing it means taking on the people who profit off it (and that goes for pretty much all our systems, people profit off our basic needs).

So the ACA didn’t fail because it was supposed to be free. It became messy because it was a giant compromise layered onto the existing private insurance system & the simple campaign lines didn’t survive the reality of how the law actually worked. Since then, no one has come up with a better plan 🤷🏻‍♀️

When the ACA kicked in, a lot of pre-ACA junk plans got cancelled because they didn’t meet basic coverage standards and pushed people into new plans with different networks, and some lost their doctors. That was a real messaging failure, not a promise of “free insurance.”

The “free” part applied only to certain low-income groups through Medicaid expansion, not the entire population.

Obama never pitched “free healthcare” His platform was:
expand medicaid, create subsidized marketplaces, regulate insurers and stop exclusions for preexisting conditions
