I've enjoyed a lot of Sam Pink this year, novels and poetry.

Here are two more that just arrived:

- Hurtest Others, short stories,

- 99 Poems – Cops of Life

He's great at punching through the stuff of life in a smash and grab of quick dirty insight.

Watford FC Dressing Room, 1953 by Hubert Andrew Freeth (1913-1986).

(Yes, Watford used to have a blue home kit.)

My brother sent me this ages ago about my grandmother's brother (I think?) John Martyn who fought with the Connaught Rangers. He died in WWI aged 21, having previously escaped from a German prisoner of war camp. Commemorated by the Basra memorial in Iraq though I'm not exactly sure where he died.

The second part of the book includes poems about Dublin, in particular around Ringsend where Mary lived for many years.

There is even a poem about @booksupstairs.bsky.social One of the last times I met Mary was at an @arlenhouse.bsky.social launch in Books Upstairs.

This painting is hanging in the window of Adams auctioneers as part of the forthcoming auction of fine asian art. I have a birthday coming up if anyone is minded to buy it for me.

My wife is away so did a 5k run by myself.

Didn't realise how fast I was going.

Mary was a true artistic spirit. Whenever I discussed writing with her she completely understood the flow. Always generous and supportive, she sent me hand written letters after reading my books.

I admired her writing enormously and have found comfort in many of her beautiful poems over the years.

I'm saddened to learn that Irish poet Mary Guckian passed away in September. She had been ill and we were in touch by phone and text over the summer.

She wrote beautifully about life and her childhood home in Leitrim.

Here she is in her younger years.

Some of the early Rothko stuff is ugly alright. Took him a while to get there. Not that I can explain the why of it all.

This is the image that comes to my mind when I think of the Tesla share price. It sells ten cars a year and is worth fifty zillion Enron dollars.

What a great ad - supposedly from the late 90s according to FB, but don't think I ever saw it at the time.

A lovely thing about Dublin is you can just bump into talented writers unexpectedly. A lunchtime delight to meet Tanya Farrelly in @chaptersbookstore.bsky.social and pick up a copy of her new book, The Marionette and the Maestro.

On which subject! In Extremis arrived recently. Very much, and sincerely, looking forward to reading it.

I found a Rothko picture that looks like Marge Simpson.

I continue to be in awe of tabloid headline writers.

This story is about a sighting of a "lion" that turned out to be a dog that had its fur trimmed.

Twentieth wedding anniversary weekend away in Clare. Beautiful walk up Mullaghmore in the Burren. One of my favourite places on earth, or any planet.

Bravo, headline writer 👏

Currently reading Essays on Thomas Kinsella: Where Love and Imagination Colour the Dark.

My interest in Kinsella is a combination of things:

– we both went to O'Connell's school and worked in Dept of Finance
– his interest in the substantiality of the self

Contd .
