| Late Pleistocene · ca. 10,000 years ago | In ancient Ireland, beneath glacial skies, the giant deer roamed—crowned with vast antlers shaped by the winds of the Siberian steppe. Though its bones sleep in Irish bogs, its story began far to the east... and ended just as the pyramids were rising

"136 countries provided assistance to the USA after September 11. I don't recall any of them asking for the money back. Here's a list of some of the countries that contributed the most — to this day, no one has received anything in return — nor have they asked: ⬇️

This skull is particularly significant because its measurements—especially the unusually large antler span—correspond precisely to the dimensions cited by Blumenbach (1799). Therefore, the antlered skull from the Dunleer area is the holotype of Megaloceros giganteus (Blumenbach, 1799).

5. Wright’s (1748) specimen: An exceptionally large antlered skull with a broad span found near Dunleer, Ireland (Wright, 1748). Wright examined the specimen during a visit to Barmeath Castle.

4. Razoumowsky’s (1786) specimen: A well-preserved antlered skull discovered near Nobber Village, Ireland. The approximately measured antler span is significantly smaller that the measurement indicated in the initial diagnosis...

3. Molyneux’s (1697) specimen: This well-preserved antlered skull was discovered in Dardistown near Drogheda, Ireland (Cuvier, 1823: pl. VI, fig. 1). Molyneux (1697) provided measurements, reporting an antler span of 10 feet 10 inches (approximately 3.3 m), and skull length of 2 feet (609.6 mm).

2. Kelly’s (1728) specimen: A shed antler found near Downpatrick, Northern Ireland (Cuvier, 1823: pl. VI, fig. 6). A single shed antler provides only an approximate idea of the antler span.

1. Knowlton’s specimen: An antlered skull found in Cowthrop near North Deighton, Yorkshire, England (Knowlton, 1746: pl. 1, fig. 3). This specimen is distinct from the other findings due to its small antler span and antler morphology, which more closely resembles M. giganteus ruffii from Germany.

Cuvier (1823) provided a detailed description, measurements, and illustrations of a well-preserved antlered skull of a giant deer, donated by Colonel Thornton to the “cabinet du roi” (King’s Cabinet [of curiosities]) in Paris...

The species name Alce gigantea was first applied by Blumenbach (1799, p. 697), who described fossil remains from Ireland, emphasizing the immense size of the skull and antlers. He reported an antler span of 14 feet (~4.3 m) but did not explicitly refer to a specific publication or fossil collection.

The giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus) is one of the most recognized fossil species among the general public; however, paradoxically, it remains poorly understood by specialists. Taxonomic issues become evident as soon as one delves into the species' classification. #science #nature #evolution #BDS
